Rhondda-based MEP Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru) has welcomed the commitment by the owners of the former Stelco-Hardy factory in Ty Newydd to meet local residents. This follows her meeting with Richard Hayward Properties in the Rhondda on Tuesday (12th September) when the MEP put forward residents concerns about the mostly-derelict site.
“I advised the company that all the local residents who answered my survey of surrounding streets considered it an eyesore and all but one wanted it demolished. Opinion was more evenly divided on any future use for the land, especially housing, recreation or employment.
“I’m pleased for the residents that Richard Hayward Properties is taking their concerns seriously and are actively drawing up a redevelopment plan. They’ve agreed to present these to the residents and elected members at a local venue and seek their response. I’ve now asked the company to do this at the earliest possible date.
“In the meantime, I’ve pressed the company, Council and Fire Service to keep the site safe, which is still the residents main concern. I’ve also asked the Environment Agency and the Council to address local fears about the risk of flooding to existing homes.”
